By 1971, the Ford Mustang was approaching the end of what fans call the first generation of this legendary automobile. There had been considerable changes to the car from the beginning, with the most recent transformation coming in the form of larger engines to compete with GM's Firebirds and Camaros. Some even say that the design cues for the 1971 Ford Mustang imitated some of GM's recent models.

Sadly, 1971 saw the end of the ragtop convertible. The offering had fallen out of favor, so only 6,100 were produced for the 1971 model year. The Mustang was now a heavier car that was still more about speed than it was about a nice ride along the beach with the top down. Hard top (and lower-cost) coupes were then the order of the day, which sold more units, but also hurt the car's reputation in the market.

The automobile market was also changing by this time, as smaller domestic and foreign cars were selling better. It was about this time that the death knell was being sounded for the Ford Mustang. With flagging sales since 1966 Ford was looking at how the Mustang could survive. In fact, just under 152,000 Mustangs were produced in 1971.

Not all was lost though, as the Boss 351 replaced the Boss 302 and 429. The Boss 351 included a competition suspension with staggered rear shocks, a four-speed transmission with a Hurst shifter, power front disc brakes, dual exhaust, and a 3.91:1 traction lock rear end.

The interiors on many 1971 models included high back bucket seats and, for the first time, power windows. These cosmetic changes are the easiest way to distinguish a 1971 Mustang from its '70 counterpart.
