Ford was beginning to find that whatever goes up must some down when it looked at the sales figures for the 1968 Mustang. Giddy over its popular car, introduced in 1965, Mustang experienced its first real slump. 1968 saw production numbers fall by 25%. Maybe it was the economy, because the '68 Mustang is still something that many desire today.

For the 1968 model year, government regulatory changes required side markers and shoulder strap seat belts. While minor changes, these two things can quickly distinguish 1967 Mustangs for the '68 model.

The 1968 car had an available 302 cubic inch V-8 engine, replacing the "Hi-Po" of previous years. C-stripe graphics and a suspended rear view mirror (attached to the windshield rather than the body) were other subtle differences that the 1968 Ford Mustang offered. Also, the turn signals were integrated into the car's hood.

Back to the engine. This new standard was capable of 230 hp but there were other offerings that year as well like the 428 Cobra Jet Mustang. The car's engine was conceived from a 428 police-car short block engine, aluminum manifold, 427 low-riser cylinder heads, and a special camshaft. The rumor is that this engine could generate in excess of 400 hp.

1968 was also the year that the Mustang went Hollywood. The GT390 was made famous in the move "Bullitt" which never identified the car as a Mustang, but the public knew what it was.

So, despite these changes and the return of the Sprint Mustang, the Shelby GT350 and GT500 Mustangs, along with a newcomer coined the "King of the Road" Shelby, Ford produced fewer than 320,000 Mustangs in 1968.
